The Dog Handshake
The concept of the "dog handshake" and why disengagement plays a crucial role in canine social interactions.
Imagine dogs have their own version of a "handshake" when they meet each other. This intricate social dance involves various steps, such as sniffing, approaching, greeting, and possibly playing. It's a natural process that dogs instinctively understand, but not all dogs are equally skilled at navigating this social exchange.
Enter disengagement – the secret weapon in fostering well-behaved and socially adept dogs. Disengagement refers to the ability of a dog to break away or redirect their attention during social interactions, especially when things get intense or overwhelming. It's like teaching them to politely excuse themselves from a conversation that's becoming too heated.
Here's why disengagement is so important:
1. Managing Social Interactions: Dogs that can disengage effectively have the skills to manage various situations during the "handshake." They can choose to engage or step back based on their comfort level and the signals from other dogs.
2. Avoiding Confrontations: Disengagement helps prevent conflicts and misunderstandings between dogs. It allows them to communicate boundaries without resorting to aggression or fear-based reactions.
3. Building Confidence: Dogs that are proficient in disengagement are often more confident and relaxed in social settings. They can navigate crowded areas, encounters with unfamiliar dogs, and challenging situations with ease.
4. Training Success: Teaching disengagement requires patience and consistent training. It enhances your dog's obedience skills, impulse control, and overall responsiveness to commands.
However, mastering disengagement is not an easy task, especially in scenarios with multiple dogs involved in the "handshake." It requires dedication, training, and understanding of your dog's cues and comfort levels.
Here are some tips for training disengagement:
- Start Small: Begin training at home without distractions before progressing to low distraction areas; teach your dog what you want so they get it right consistently THEN add in low distractions
- Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward your dog for disengaging from distractions or potential conflicts. Use treats, praise, and toys as motivators.
-Play disengagement games: Teach your dog games that shape their brain to disengage and manage their energy naturally.
- Be Patient: Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither are perfect canine manners. Consistency and patience are key to success.
By incorporating disengagement training into your dog's daily routine, you equip them with valuable social skills that benefit their overall well-being and interactions with other dogs.
Remember, every successful disengagement is a step toward a harmonious "dog handshake" and a happier, more confident pup!
Training is a lifestyle not a season, there is always something to learn .

The Art of Considerate Dog Walking: Understanding Leash Etiquette
Today, let’s delve into an essential aspect of responsible dog ownership: leash etiquette and the importance of being considerate while walking our furry companions.
Firstly, not all dogs are social butterflies, and that’s perfectly okay. Just like humans, dogs have different personalities, preferences, and boundaries. Some may relish every opportunity to make new friends, while others prefer a quieter, more solitary walk. It’s essential to respect each dog’s comfort level and not assume that every canine encounter should end in a playdate.
One of the primary reasons you might see a dog on a leash is for safety and management. Perhaps they are working on their recall training, dealing with reactivity, or recovering from an injury/surgery. Whatever the reason, it’s a clear indicator that the dog needs space or controlled interactions. As responsible pet parents, it's our duty to recognize these signals and act accordingly.
Picture this: you’re out on a peaceful stroll with your dog, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine. Suddenly, another dog approaches, pulling at its leash, eager to say hello. Sounds harmless, right? Not always. What if your dog is recovering from surgery, dealing with an injury, feeling under the weather, or simply not comfortable around other dogs? Understanding these nuances is crucial for fostering a harmonious environment for both dogs and their humans. Humans often misinterpret dog body language and think their dog is pulling to get to the other dog or person because they are happy or excited. Often this isn’t the case and this is where the uncomfortable encounter begins. Stay tuned for the next Dog Blog post about dog encounters.
Imagine yourself in a similar situation. How would you feel if strangers constantly approached you without considering your feelings or personal space? It can be unnerving and stressful, leading to tension and potential conflicts. Dogs are no different; they communicate through body language, and it's crucial to interpret and respect their cues.
Here are some key considerations for practicing considerate leash etiquette:
1. Respect Leash Boundaries: If you see a dog on a leash, assume there’s a reason for it. Avoid allowing your dog to approach without permission, especially if the leashed dog seems uncomfortable or reactive.
2. One Dog at a Time: If you have multiple dogs, consider taking turns during introductions. This prevents overwhelming the dog and allows for more controlled interactions.
3. Ask Permission: Always ask the other pet parent before allowing your dog to approach theirs. Respect their decision, whether it’s a yes or a no.
4. Observe Body Language: Pay attention to your dog's body language and that of other dogs. Signs of stress, fear, or discomfort should prompt you to create distance and avoid confrontation. This is where disengagement is so important.
5. Practice Recall: Work on your dog’s recall and disengagement skills in controlled environments with games and on a long leash when on the trails. A reliable recall is essential for off-leash interactions.
By fostering a culture of understanding and respect during dog walks, we create safer and more enjoyable experiences for everyone involved. Let’s make considerate leash etiquette common knowledge and prioritize the well-being of our four-legged friends.
Happy walking, and may every leash adventure be filled with wagging tails and positive interactions!

Keeping Paws on the Ground: Strategies to Stop Your Dog from Jumping
Hello, fellow dog parents!
Today, let's tackle a common behaviour concern that many dog owners face: jumping. Whether it's greeting guests, getting too excited during playtime, or trying to reach for a tasty treat on the counter, jumping can be a challenging behaviour to address. But fear not, as we have effective strategies to help your dog keep their paws on the ground and maintain calmness in various situations.
Teaching Calmness
One of the keys to curbing jumping behaviour is teaching your dog to be calm and composed.
Active rest involves helping your dog take the thinking out of their day! Creating a space where your dog doesn’t have to make any choices they just sleep, and get good quality sleep in a quiet, cozy space where they feel safe and relaxed. These activities help channel your dog's energy in a positive way and encourage a calm state of mind.
Passive calming activities, on the other hand, involve creating a calm space where your dog can have access to snuffle mats, scattered food, scent work looking for food in a food toy, a filled toppl/kong, ect. This promotes a calm space for your dog to have some mental stimulation but in a calm way, promoting relaxed loose body language while interacting with you.
Consistently reinforcing calm behaviour through active rest and passive activities helps your dog learn to remain relaxed in various situations.
Gated Communities
Another effective strategy is to create gated communities within your home to prevent your dog from practicing jumping behaviours, especially at doors or when guests arrive. By controlling your dog's access to certain areas, you can minimize opportunities for them to engage in unwanted behaviours.
For example, use baby gates or barriers to restrict access to the front door or areas where guests typically enter. This gives you more control over greetings and allows you to redirect your dog's attention to positive behaviours, such as a lick mat or long lasting chew.
Teaching a Strong Boundary
Teaching your dog to have a strong boundary (or designated place) can also be beneficial in managing jumping. This can be a designated mat or bed where your dog learns to go and happily stay there till released. The key is to make this place highly rewarding and valuable for your dog.
Remember to reward the boundary itself, not just the dog. Use treats and praise to reinforce the positive association with the designated area. This helps your dog understand that staying in that place is rewarding and encourages them to choose that behaviour over jumping or wandering.
Bonus Game: Four on the Floor
Now, for a fun and engaging game to reinforce keeping paws on the ground, let's play "Four on the Floor." This game focuses on rewarding your dog for maintaining calmness and staying grounded.
Start by dropping rewards on the floor away from tempting areas like counters or doorways. Reward your dog for choosing to investigate the floor rather than jumping or exploring other areas. Gradually increase the difficulty by scattering treats on the floor while gently petting your dog to simulate distractions.
You can also play this game on leash with another person nearby. Reward your dog for staying calm and focused on the floor while gradually introducing distractions like tossing treats towards the person or making noises. This helps your dog understand that staying calm and grounded leads to positive rewards and attention.
Consistency is key in reinforcing these strategies and games. Practice them regularly in various settings to help your dog develop strong habits and replace jumping behaviors with more desirable alternatives.
With patience, positive reinforcement, and a bit of creativity, you can successfully keep your dog's paws on the ground and enjoy peaceful interactions together.

Enhancing Your Dog's Journey: The Power of Harnesses with 2 Points of Contact
Embarking on adventures with our canine companions is not just about reaching the destination; it's about the journey itself. As dog lovers and enthusiasts, we strive to ensure our furry friends feel safe, comfortable, and equipped to navigate the world around them.
One essential tool in our toolkit for fostering this confidence is the harness with two points of contact. In this blog post, we'll delve into the benefits of utilizing such a harness and explore how we can prepare our beloved pets for the wonders of the world through skill-building and games based positive reinforcement training.
The Power of Two Points:
Traditional collars may exert pressure on a dog's neck, potentially causing discomfort or injury, especially for dogs prone to pulling or those with respiratory issues. Harnesses with two points of contact distribute the force more evenly across the body, reducing strain on the neck and providing greater control over your dog's movements.
1. Enhanced Control: The dual points of connection, typically located at the chest and back, offer improved handling, allowing for more gentle guidance and redirection when needed. This added control is particularly beneficial for training sessions and outings in busy or distracting environments.
2. Comfort and Safety: By dispersing pressure across the chest and shoulders (with a “Y” shape across the chest) these harnesses minimize the risk of choking or injury, promoting a safer and more comfortable experience for your canine companion, whether they're exploring the neighbourhood or embarking on a hiking adventure.
3. Prevents Pulling: Many dogs instinctively pull on their leash, whether out of excitement or the desire to explore. Harnesses with two points of contact discourage pulling behaviour by redirecting the force to the body's center, making it less rewarding for your dog to pull and easier for you to guide them with positive reinforcement techniques.
Preparing Your Pup for the World:
While a reliable harness can enhance your dog's comfort and control, true preparedness for the world involves more than just the right gear. Building your dog's skills and confidence through positive reinforcement training lays the foundation for a lifetime of enjoyable adventures. Here's how you can help your furry friend thrive:
1.Games Based Training: Learning how to communicate with your dog in their language, body language! This is the best gift you can give your dog and playing special brain shaping games with them does this while building their skills. Consistent training builds trust and strengthens the bond between you and your dog, making outings more enjoyable for both parties.
2. Exposure to novel things/environments: Introduce your dog to different sights, sounds, and surfaces gradually, starting with familiar surroundings and gradually expanding their comfort zone. Exposing them to new experiences in a positive and controlled manner builds resilience and adaptability, equipping them to handle novel situations with confidence. Think novelty party! Where your dog gets to experience new but strange things in the comfort of their home where they feel the safest.
3. “Socialization” with People and Animals: Let’s arm our dogs with the skills to appropriately handle all the weird situations they are going to have living in our crazy busy world. Think outside the box here by growing skills in your dog first and then letting them watch the world from a distance so they aren’t overwhelmed which leads to rehearsing choices that aren’t helpful like jumping, pulling, barking, humping or nipping. Not always interacting with the world but just letting it go on around them helps them feel more calm and in control of the situation.
Harnesses with two points of contact serve as invaluable tools for enhancing control, comfort, and safety during your dog's adventures. However, true preparedness for the world requires more than just the right gear; it involves nurturing your dog's skills and confidence through positive reinforcement games based training and controlled exposure to diverse experiences.
By investing time and effort into your canine companion's development, you pave the way for a lifetime of joyful exploration and companionship.
So, gear up, train up, and embark on new adventures together – the world is waiting!

Building Skills: Preparing Your Dog for the World Through Games.
In the bustling world we live in, our furry companions are often faced with a myriad of stimuli that can overwhelm them. From noisy streets, dog filled trails and parks to boisterous crowds, it's no wonder many dogs find themselves stressed and overstimulated. But what if we could reshape their perceptions and empower them to navigate the world with confidence and composure?
At the heart of this transformation lies the power of games.
By creating a calm, safe environment filled with enriching brain shaping games, we can help our dogs develop invaluable skills that transcend mere obedience. Rather than subjecting them to stressful situations where they may become overwhelmed, we can guide them through playful interactions that stimulate their minds and build skills to grow their personal weaknesses into strengths.
Imagine a scenario where your dog encounters a trigger that would typically send them into a frenzy. Instead of reacting impulsively, they pause, assess the situation, and make a conscious choice to disengage. This level of self-control and emotional regulation is not innate in all dogs but can be cultivated through purposeful games and I can help you learn how to do this.
One of the key benefits of utilizing games to reshape your dog's brain is the opportunity to shift their perspective. Through interactive activities we can engage their senses and encourage them to explore their environment in a positive light. By gradually introducing them to different situations in a controlled setting, we provide them with the tools to process information calmly and confidently.
Let's take the example of a dog who exhibits reactive behavior towards other dogs while on walks. Instead of avoiding encounters altogether or resorting to corrective measures, we can employ games that promote focus and relaxation. By incorporating activities like "Find It" where they search for treats hidden in the grass or learning management strategies that help to keep your dog in a non reactive state while out, we redirect their attention and reinforce desirable behaviours all while growing their skills in a comfortable, safe space.
Moreover, by encouraging our dogs to make choices independently during playtime, we empower them to think critically and problem-solve. Whether it's navigating a more brain challenging game or incorporating a new environment with games they are really good at, they learn to exercise their cognitive abilities in a low-pressure environment.
This autonomy not only builds confidence but also strengthens the bond and communication between dog and owner as they collaborate in the pursuit of fun.
Ultimately, the goal is to unleash your dog's full potential by tapping into their innate curiosity and adaptability. Instead of relying solely on commands to dictate their actions, we equip them with the skills to navigate the world proactively. By instilling a sense of empowerment and optimism, we pave the way for a harmonious relationship built on trust and understanding.
So, the next time you interact with your furry companion, consider the transformative power of games.
Embrace the opportunity to shape their perception of the world and guide them towards a future filled with confidence and resilience.
Together, let's embark on a journey of discovery and growth, one game at a time.

Unleashing the Power of Nutrition: A Guide to Optimal Dental Health for Your Pooch
Let’s talk about dental health for your dog.
In my previous life I was a dental assistant and even though I am now in my passion career of working with dogs and their humans I still value the importance of good oral health.
Did you know that a varied and wholesome diet can make a world of difference for those pearly whites? Let's explore the key ingredients that can keep your dog's oral and overall health in tip-top shape.
1. Raw Chicken and Turkey Necks: Crunchy Delights for Dental Bliss
Raw chicken and turkey necks aren't just delicious; they're nature's toothbrushes! Gnawing on these raw treats helps remove plaque and tartar, promoting healthy gums and preventing dental issues. Plus, it's a fun and engaging activity for your pup – they'll love the crunch! Nom Nom Nom!
2. Homemade Treats: A Taste of Love for Sparkling Teeth
Whipping up homemade treats is a fantastic way to control what goes into your dog's diet. Opt for recipes with dental benefits, like carrot or apple slices, which provide a natural chewing motion, helping to keep those chompers clean. It's a win-win – tasty and tooth-friendly!
I attended a virtual “bake off” with Devon Dogs and loved it. They have a free dog recipe ebook I highly recommend downloading it is truly amazing.
3.Doggy Toothpaste and Brushing: The Classic Combo
Don't forget the classics!
Introduce your dog to the joys of tooth brushing with doggy toothpaste. Choose flavours they'll love, like poultry, mint or peanut butter. Make it a positive experience by starting slow, with gentle brushes, and gradually increasing the time. Regular brushing is a simple yet effective way to prevent dental issues and keep those teeth shining.
4. A-OK9 Supplements: Boosting Health from Nose to Tail
Speaking of supplements, A-OK9 is a game-changer!
This all-in-one supplement is like a multivitamin for your furry friend. With essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, it contributes to overall health, including dental wellness. It's an easy way to ensure your pup gets the nutrients they need for a long, happy life.
5. Gut Health: The Foundation of Overall Well-being
Did you know that a healthy gut equals a healthy dog?
A well-balanced and varied diet supports your pup's gut microbiome, which plays a crucial role in overall health. Consider incorporating probiotics or prebiotics to maintain a happy and harmonious digestive system, ultimately promoting a longer life with fewer diseases and injuries. I love this one from Bosley’s in Courtenay as it is a powder it is so convenient to have on hand and great for digestive health.
Remember, every dog is unique, so it's essential to tailor their diet to their specific needs. And of course, regular dental check-ups with your veterinarian are key to catching any issues early on.

The Myth about Dominance
Let's talk about something that has been ingrained in dog training culture for a while: the idea of dominance.
For years, the concept of dominating your furry friend to establish control and obedience has been a prevailing notion. However, the truth is quite different from what this theory suggests.
Dominance theory in dog training revolves around the idea that dogs are hierarchical animals and need to be shown who's the alpha, essentially that they must submit to their owners to behave properly. This theory has led to training methods that focus on being forceful, assertive, and even confrontational to assert dominance over our four-legged companions. But here's the thing – this approach is not just outdated; it's also damaging to our dogs in more ways than one.
Firstly, let's debunk the myth: dogs are not wolves, and their social structure doesn’t mirror that of their distant relatives. Recent studies and observations have revealed that the concept of alpha wolves dominating the pack, as portrayed in old studies, is not accurate. In fact, wolf packs are more like families, where leadership is earned through cooperation and mutual respect rather than aggression and domination.
When we try to establish dominance over our dogs using punitive methods, it often leads to fear, stress, and anxiety in our furry friends. They may comply out of fear, but it doesn't strengthen the bond between human and dog. Instead, it damages their spirit, affects their learning abilities, and strains the relationship between the dog and their owner.
What's more effective and, importantly, humane, is building a relationship based on understanding, empathy, and positive reinforcement. Dogs thrive on positive interactions, clear communication, and rewards for good behavior. By using force-free training methods, we not only teach our dogs what we expect from them but also encourage trust and respect.
Science-backed positive reinforcement methods, such as clicker training, games based training, and behavioural conditioning, have proven to be more effective in shaping desired behaviours while preserving the mental and emotional well-being of our beloved pets.
So, why does the dominance theory persist? It could be that it offers an easy justification for using harsh training methods. However, as our understanding of animal behavior evolves, it's clear that this approach is not the best or most compassionate way to teach and bond with our dogs.
In conclusion, the key to a strong, harmonious relationship with your furry friend lies in mutual trust, respect, and understanding. Embrace positive training methods that foster cooperation and communication. By doing so, you not only enhance your dog's skills and spirits but also nurture a deep, loving bond that lasts a lifetime.
Remember, your dog is a cherished member of your family. Let's treat them with the kindness and compassion they deserve.

Power Pose
Do you have things that you do to keep your confidence topped up in tough situations?
Maybe you have a mantra you say in your head to keep your spirits up?
Maybe you workout , eat healthy, meditate or read to help you stay in the right head space to be positive.
This could be called your Power Pose!
These are things that you keep doing over and over throughout your life to keep your confidence and optimism up.
Your dog needs their own “Power Pose” to go back to while they navigate the harder things in life and you can help
them grow a skill or behaviour that can be their Power Pose!
How amazing would it be to be able to empower your dog to maintain optimism and confidence while dealing with something that is tough for them!
Maybe learning a new skill, playing a new game, being in a new environment or playing with a new friend. These are all tough situations and having something that you can ask your dog to do (a power pose) helps top up their optimism and confidence to continue on in this tough environment.
Lets take the behaviour of getting your dog to put 2 front paws onto an object. This is such a great behaviour because it grows confidence and puts them in a position that makes them feel good about themselves. Their head is high and their chest is out, they know that what they are doing is going to get praise or a reward from mom or dad, and this makes them feel good about themselves. It can also support them while they are learning a new behaviour so you add the pressure of learning a new behaviour with the release of doing their Power Pose.
How cool is that!
Growing your dogs Power Pose also helps them learn the value of disengaging from a high pressure situation to releasing their energy elsewhere (like doing their Power Pose)
This converts to the real world when your dog feels that uncomfortable pressure building (maybe they see a dog and this makes them nervous) and chooses to release the pressure coming back to you for an interaction. This is the perfect time to reward them AND boost their confidence and optimism with their Power Pose!
As an example I have a client with the sweetest pup who is nervous around other dogs especially on leash. Barking, lunging, snarling and flopping like a fish on the end of the leash with fear, poor baby. They have diligently followed their behaviour program training plan and the games that I have prescribed to them to help reshape their pups brain FOR the moment- this means training outside of the situation at home till they are ace at the games, then take it out to their yard or an empty field slowly adding in the smells, sounds and distractions in the environment.
Always being aware so you can manage the situation and prepare to “get out of dodge” if an “offender” enters the picture. This creates a good training plan of building skills slowly in calm, controlled environments and gradually adding in small distractions while growing your pups skills and value in disengaging.
Fast forward a few months; I went to walk him and now when he sees another dog he immediately turns to me and comes beside me letting me know that he feels better coming away from what used to be a stressful situation. His brain has been reshaped to see huge value in coming away from his '“offenders”, he can maintain self control and choose to disengage with a cool, calm demeanor ! Way to go team!
If you want to learn how to reshape your dogs brain and support them with a Power Pose then book a free call to chat about games based training and how it can help you and your dog.

Building a Healthy Relationship with Your Dog
Let's dive into creating a strong and healthy relationship with our furry companions.
As a passionate games based dog trainer who believes in positive reinforcement and outdoor adventures with your dog, I'm thrilled to share insights that can help enhance your connection with your pup.
Signs of a Healthy Relationship with Your Dog
Trust and Comfort: Your dog willingly approaches you and seeks your company. They exhibit relaxed body language and feel secure in your presence.
Effective Communication: You and your dog understand each other's cues and signals. There's a smooth flow of communication during training sessions or everyday interactions.
Mutual Respect: Both you and your dog respect each other's boundaries. Your pup listens to your cues, and you acknowledge their needs and preferences.
Joyful Interactions: You share moments of joy, laughter, and playfulness. Play sessions are filled with excitement and fun, contributing positively to your bond.
Indicators That Your Relationship Needs Attention
Lack of Engagement: Your dog seems disinterested in spending time with you, avoids eye contact, or displays withdrawn behaviour.
Communication Breakdown: Difficulty understanding or responding to each other's body language or cues during training or interactions.
Stress or Anxiety: Signs of stress or anxiety in your dog, such as excessive barking, destructive behaviour, separation struggles or withdrawal, may indicate an underlying issue.
Conflict or Aggression: Occasional conflicts or aggressive behaviour towards you or other dogs may signal a need for intervention and a closer look at your relationship dynamics. I can help you with this, don’t stress.
The Relationship Bank Account: Investing in Your Dog's Trust and Bond
Think of your relationship with your dog as a special piggy bank – one that doesn't hold money but instead treasured moments, experiences, and trust.
This "Relationship Bank Account" grows as you deposit positive interactions and experiences, fostering a stronger and more trusting connection with your furry friend.
However, just like a real bank account, withdrawals can impact the balance and growth.
We can’t always avoid withdrawals:
Some negative interactions are things like:
Traveling
Vet visits
Dog reacting to events or the environment.
Times when your dog gets scared
Negative (aversive) training or tools like choke chains, shock or prong collars, shaking bottles, water spray bottles, yelling at your dog
A frustrating training session
Disappointment with your dog
Just like adding money to your piggy bank when you take some out, you can balance out your relationship account too by adding in positive interactions with your dog.
Being aware of what is a negative interaction (withdrawal) for your dog and topping up the relationship account with positive interactions will help protect your relationship from those inevitable withdrawals.
Nurturing a Healthy Relationship with Your Pooch
Engaging Activities that pay into your relationship piggy bank:
Playing Interactive Games: Engaging your dog in concept training games fosters mental stimulation, physical play and strengthens the bond.
Massage or Petting Sessions: Regular gentle massages or soothing petting sessions can be incredibly calming and create a sense of trust and security.
Sharing Meals: Feeding time can be a bonding opportunity. This is a great way to grow your dogs value in their food and in you.
Playtime with Favourite Toys: Encouraging play with your dog's favourite toys strengthens the association of joy and fun with your presence.
Exploring Together: Outdoor adventures, like hikes or beach outings, not only provide exercise but also allow for exploration and shared experiences.
Exercising Together: Playing together while walking or hiking increases your dogs focus on you rather than the environment creating more opportunity to capture your dog making great choices in the “real world”.
Participating in Activities or Sports: Engaging in dog sports or activities like agility or dog parkour can enhance trust and teamwork between you and your dog.
Always Depositing: The Secret to a Flourishing Relationship
In this special account, the more you deposit, the more it grows. Every interaction, whether it's a playful game, a comforting petting session, a training session, or an adventure together, serves as a deposit into this invaluable account.
Imagine never having too high a credit balance in this Relationship Bank Account. Continuously look for opportunities to deposit, as these deposits are the building blocks of an amazing bond with your canine companion.
The Amazing Benefits of a High Balance
Having an impressive balance in your Relationship Bank Account brings remarkable rewards. It's like having an ace up your sleeve with your dog. When your account balance is high you are more likely to have a dog who is relaxed, calm, loves to be around you, wants to listen to you, and can’t wait to interact with you.
Being the Ultimate Team
Imagine being a true team with your dog, sharing an unbreakable bond that transcends mere companionship. You provide support, guidance, and love, and in return, your dog offers loyalty, trust, and endless affection.
This relationship isn't just about your shared adventures or playful moments; it's about creating a partnership built on trust, understanding, and unwavering support. It's about facing the world together, knowing you've got each other's backs no matter what.
Who wouldn't strive for such an incredible partnership with their furry friend?
Investing in the Unbreakable Bond
Remember, every positive interaction counts as a deposit in your Relationship Bank Account.
The more you invest, the richer and more rewarding your bond with your dog becomes.
So, cherish those moments, play those games, and invest in the most rewarding account you'll ever have – the one filled with love, trust, and unforgettable adventures shared with your best four-legged friend.
Keep investing, keep growing, and enjoy the endless dividends of an extraordinary relationship with your beloved canine companion.

Indy & Vida approved !
Do you love useful things? Tired of trying different items and ending up disappointed?
Well I love to find useful and helpful gear, gadgets and good stuff for my dog so I thought that I would share some of my favourites with you.
If you follow me on social media you will have seen my cute dog robes that I bought for the dogs- especially Moose the golden retriever that walks with me a few times a week. He is the biggest water dog I have ever met and will happily seek out any body of water, big or small, and proceed to look for me as he slowly lowers his body into the water…LOL ! He is the goofiest guy I just love him.
This robe is also great for after a bath, maybe at Courtenay Bosley's , so that your sweet pup doesn’t get cold on the ride home. Cause you know they are NOT letting you use the air dryer on them HAHAHA!
If you wash your dog at home then you will love this ultra absorbent microfiber towel to dry off your pup and the bath mat to make sure they don’t track their cute little paw prints all over the house. Indy loves to snuggle in her robe by the fire after a bath especially in these cooler months. If you want some awesome hand mitt drying towels or some great food toys head over to Messy Mutts which is a great Canadian company offering may unique options.
I am all about the mental enrichment for our dogs and if I can incorporate enrichment into a meal then I feel like the queen of productivity! There isn’t always time for our morning game session but Indy still needs her breaky so if I want to enrich her meal I have so many options. My go to is a noise box which you can make at home with a box and some recycling. But I also have some puzzles, a toppl, lick mat or lick bowl , snuffle ball , snuffle mat or a silicone snuffle mat that all provide great mental enrichment for Indy.
Indy and I love to practice dog parkour on our adventures and your dog needs a harness to properly and safely participate so my go to is this double clip harness one from Rocky Mountain Dog . It provides the proper “Y” shaped form to allow full shoulder movement when running/jumping, a handy safety handle on the back for emergency situations or just to help spot your dog when doing parkour, the clip on the front also allows you to use a double clip leash to have the best control of your dog when walking.
If you are looking for anything else for yourself or your dog Rocky Mountain Dog has a full store of super cool items for everyone in the house.. well maybe not the cat LOL but you will get a bit of a discount if you use my link and who doesn’t like a discount!
Some of my favourite preventative products are from Only One Treats in Surrey BC. They offer high quality dehydrated treats that are great for helping bridge the gap for your dog, like coming home from a super fun hike, walk or play can cause some dogs to get the zoomies and go crazy when they get home. If you offer them a chew on the car ride home or right when you arrive home they will have an outlet for their energy and this helps them to be able to control their energy till they are calmer and can relax enough for sleep.
They also offer Indy’s favourite toothpaste and green lipped mussel powder which helps keep her muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints flexible and lubricated. Indy and Vida love it mixed with cream cheese on their lick mats.
I am always adding new favourite items and trying out new techniques for mental enrichment. I hope that you enjoyed this post with a little bit of insight into Indy and I’s world, we love to share what works for us and how you can add enrichment and gadgets into your life to make things easier for us (the parents) and the dogs.

A Howl’oween good time
Halloween is a fun human activity but what do our dogs think of all of the festivities?
Dogs like to know what to do in situations and this causes them to predict what will happen, often getting themselves into trouble if they struggle with any interactions outdoor like seeing dogs, bikes, kids running ect.
This can cause them to find the novel, scary and strange events of halloween challenging. There is so much going on during the trick or treating time that our dogs are often left to “fend for themselves” when faced with scary situations.
Even walking before the busy trick or treat time can be eventful with all the scary motion sensor figures, big spiders, pumpkins and other spooky decorations, your dog may be stressed even before the “big event”. It is no wonder that once the door starts knockin’ or the fireworks start poppin’ that your dog is Howlin’.
So how can we support our dog in this stressful time?
There are many things that we can do to help our dogs to navigate this spooky season.
Teaching our dogs to be calm and settled.
What does your dog do throughout the day? If you strive to grow calmness in your dog that is going to be their “go to” choice for behaviours. What this means is when your dog is not playing, training or interacting with you what are they doing? This time is best spent growing calmness in 3 different ways
Active rest- that recovery sleep that is so important, especially with a dog that is constantly “doing”
Passive rest- I call this the in between time, when your dog needs a bit of help going from “track star to nap star”, try scatter feeding, snuffle mats, filled toppl and bones, tracheas, lick mats, dehydrated treats, scent work, puzzle toys and long-lasting chews.
Down Time- this is when I like to train calmness with a boundary or while I work. I reward my dog for their calmness using their food. Capturing these times of calm and rewarding it (without saying anything) helps the dog understand that good things come when they are calm. Then that predicting kicks in and they try to predict when you will reward them again, watch for the “fake” calm LOL.
2. Growing skills like optimism, confidence and disengagement
This can set our dogs up for success in any new, scary or stressful situation and it is so much fun to be able to train different concepts to reshape their brain. A dog’s level of optimism can determine how they react to:
• A new or unusual object (an umbrella, a jack-o-lantern, a new object in the house, an existing object moved to a different location in the house)
• A particular person (size, shape, beard, hat, coat or anything new)
• A knock at the door or the ring of a doorbell
The more optimistic your dog is the better they think every situation is going to be!
How awesome would that be to have a dog that is happy and able to roll through many different situations with ease.
3. Be Prepared!
Even if you have all the skills, calmness and an easy going dog it is best to prepare your dog for the excitement.
Make sure that you give them a toilet break before dark and before all the activities start (especially fireworks if those are a struggle)
ALWAYS have your dog on lead in these unpredictable situations (even if recall is excellent)
Skip dinner in a bowl ( forever LOL) and find ways to use your dogs food for enrichment when there is stuff going on and provide them a calm, quiet place with background music if they like that. Some ides for enrichment would be stuffing bones, tracheas, toppls, scatter feeding or a snuffle mat, lick mats, puzzle toys, long lasting chews or playing some hide n seek with their food really gets their brain working and will tire them out even if you can’t walk on halloween night.
4. Practice with a spooky surprise party (this does not mean scare your dog)
If your dog finds new items or halloween decorations scary help them out by growing their confidence in a safe space (like your home) before you put your decorations out lay them out and scatter food through out them so your dog can wander through the items happily eating their food. If they find this too hard scatter it on the outside of the pile of items and let them grow their comfort before tossing food into the items.
If you have your items out already then have dinner out front with your dog eating their food around the decorations (if you have motion items turn them off ) once they are comfortable I would turn on motion items and have someone activate it while you are farther away and reward your dog. If they are scared I would move away till they can look in the direction and take rewards, this may be a big distance and if that is the case then I would look to alternate options for this halloween like leaving your dog home while you go out maybe with a yummy meaty bone in a safe area.
If you want to learn how to grow skills and reshape your dogs brain then book a call to find out if we are a good fit and which program would be best for you and your dog.

Managing Your Excitable Puppy: Disengagement, Leash Control, and Staying Close
Puppies are bundles of joy, but they can also be bundles of energy, especially when they encounter other dogs or people. As a loving dog parent, you want to help them channel that enthusiasm in a positive way. In this blog post, we'll discuss three essential management skills for dealing with an excited puppy: disengagement, leash control, and the importance of your puppy's proximity to you.
The best way to prepare your puppy for the challenges in the real world is to build their skills at home BEFORE you put them into situations they aren’t skilled for. Learning a few skills like the ones listed below will help you and your pup deal with common challenges in the real world.
1. Disengagement:
Disengagement is a fundamental skill that teaches your puppy to shift their focus away from the exciting stimulus and back to you. Here's how to work on it:
Start Early: Begin disengagement training in a low-distraction environment, like home. Using an attention noise, like a kissy noise, to help break your puppy’s focus and redirect their attention to you.
Add Distractions Gradually: As your puppy becomes proficient, gradually introduce more distractions. Utilizing the attention noise and a conditioned word that means “that is none of my business” will create a dog that has the brain power to understand the value of disengagement.
Reward and Praise: Whenever your puppy disengages from the stimulus reward them with treats and enthusiastic praise. Also adding distance to the reward can keep a calmer demeanor and not overflow the “bucket”
2. Leash Management:
A well-controlled leash is your best friend when dealing with an overexcited puppy. Here's how to make leash management work for you:
Use a Front-Clip Harness: Front-clip harnesses can help reduce pulling and give you more control over your puppy's movements. By adding a second attachment point ( back clip) and creating a loop with your leash gives you front and back control of your puppy, growing their knowledge of walking without pulling.
Practice Loose Leash Walking: In a controlled environment, practice walking your puppy on a loose leash. Reward them often for staying close and make it fun with games that improve their skills for handling body pressure from being close to you.
Anticipate Excitement: Be aware of your surroundings and anticipate your puppy’s reaction when they spot another dog or person. Teaching your dog opposition reflex leash skills at home and in calm environments helps your puppy succeed when out on leash.
3. The Value of Proximity to You:
Teaching your puppy that being close to you is rewarding can be a game-changer. Here's how to do it:
Treats and Praise: Whenever your puppy chooses to come close to you while you are walking in the house or yard reward them generously with treats and praise.
Stay Engaging: Keep your interactions with your puppy fun and engaging. Play games, offer toys, and create a positive association with being near you.
Gradual Exposure: As your puppy becomes more comfortable with proximity to you gradually introduce the games you both know well in new environments to open up their world safely.
Dealing with an excited puppy when they see other dogs or people requires patience and consistent training. By mastering the skills of disengagement, leash control, and emphasizing your puppy's value in proximity to you, you'll help your furry friend become a well-behaved and happy companion.
Remember, it's all about building a strong and positive bond with your puppy as you both embark on this wonderful journey together.

The brain’s role in dog reactivity
Blog post about your dogs brain and reactivity
All dogs could be classified (or labeled) as reactive, a reactive dog is having an emotional response to an event or situation. When a dog reacts excessively or what society has deemed “inappropriately” the dog is labeled as reactive-usually in a negative context.
I find this really sad and hate to label dogs.
They are misunderstood, often fearful and needing support from their humans in these times. I can help you learn how to support your dog AND grow their skills to create a happier, calmer, more confident dog.
Dogs are incredible creatures, and understanding why some become reactive is fascinating.
This is called neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity, simply put, is the brain's remarkable ability to adapt and change in response to experiences. In humans and dogs alike, it's what allows us to learn, adapt, and recover from injuries. Think of it as your brain's way of rewiring itself.
How Neuroplasticity Relates to Dog Reactivity
So, imagine this: a dog has an encounter with another dog that's less than friendly. The brain takes note of this, and if it happens repeatedly, it starts to form neural pathways associated with fear or anxiety. These pathways become stronger with each negative experience.
But here's the cool part: just like with humans, dogs can rewire their brains. Positive reinforcement games based training plays a big role here. When pet parents work with me they are helping their reactive dog by guiding them to create new, positive associations in their dog's brain, essentially forming new neural pathways- how cool is that!
Why do dogs react?
Some dogs react outward with barking, lunging and growling while other dogs react inward and usually run, hide or back away/lie down. Which ever way your dog reacts I like to remember that they aren’t acting aggressive or submissive, they are fearful and scared. This helps us to become more compassionate and resist the urge to lash out at them in their most vulnerable time when they need support the most.
Through patience, consistency, creating good choice options and building their skills, these new pathways can override the old ones. It's like paving a new road in their brain that leads to calmness and confidence instead of fear and reactivity.
So, as a games based positive reinforcement dog trainer I’m not just playing games; I’m reshaping a dog's brain and helping them become calm, happier, more confident and optimistic pups.
And to me that's pawsitively awesome! 🐾😊

Jumping for Joy: How to Handle Your Bouncy Buddy!
Jumping for joy syndrome.. does your dog have this?
Hey there, dog lovers! 🐾
Does your furry friend have a case of the "jumping for joy" syndrome? You know, when they can't contain their excitement and leap up to greet you, your guests, or anyone who walks through the door? Don't worry; you're not alone, and we've got some tail-wagging solutions!
1. The "Four on the Floor" Rule
First things first, let's establish a golden rule: "Four on the Floor." Teach your dog that the only way to get your attention is by keeping all four paws firmly planted. Try to capture this rather than wait for the behaviour, so be prepared to reward early and sometimes it can seem like it is too early but the more your dog gets rewards with their feet on the floor the more they will keep their feet on the floor.
2. Capturing the less exciting moments
Continue training in less exciting environments, for example, when you go to the kitchen for a snack and you come back out to where your pup is and they don’t jump up on you, reward your pup with treats and affection when they greet you calmly. Capturing these lower arousal experiences and reinforcing them will go a long way to training calmness in your pup.
3. Train an Alternate Greeting Behaviour
Have you ever seen those dogs that can stay on their bed even when there is so much excitement all around them. Well training a solid boundary is a good way to get this calm behaviour. Start by creating desire to be on the bed (boundary) by feeding the bed anytime your dog goes onto it. This grows a high value for the bed and makes it a place your dog wants to be.
4. Consistency is Key
Consistency is like the magic wand of dog training. Make sure everyone in your household understands the management strategies and plays the games. This will prevent mixed signals and help your pup understand what's expected. The best part about games based training is you can see amazing results with as little a 3 minutes a day!! What! I know it is amazing how play increases learning.
5. Get Some Exercise and Mental Stimulation
Make sure your furry friend gets plenty of mental exercise to keep that excess energy occupied. Using food toys or creating a noise box, treasure hunt or hide and seek with your dogs meals goes a long way to creating an amazing mentally enriched mealtime. A hike, some games, a walk at the beach, or a stand-up paddle boarding session can add to the experience and incorporating their meal into these activites keeps them even more engaged.
6. Seek Professional Help
If your dog's jumping habits are deeply ingrained, consider consulting a certified professional dog trainer to expertly guide you with a bespoke plan exactly for your pup's unique needs.
Remember, patience and positivity are your best friends in this training journey. Your dog loves you unconditionally, and with a little effort, you can teach them the art of a pawsitive greeting.
So, here's to happy, grounded greetings and a lifelong bond with your bouncy buddy! 🐶❤️
Catch you on the trails and by the lake, fellow dog enthusiasts! 🌲🏞️
Building Confidence and Optimism in Your Reactive Dog Through Games Based Training
Hey there, fellow dog enthusiasts! 🐶
Are you ready to embark on an exciting journey to help your reactive dog become more confident and optimistic? Well, you've come to the right place! As a passionate games based positive reinforcement dog trainer, I'm here to share some pawsitively awesome tips to make your furry friend shine with newfound confidence.
Let's dive in and make tail-wagging progress together!
Game On: The Power of Playful Training
Imagine turning training sessions into thrilling games that make your pup's tail wag with joy! The secret sauce? Positive reinforcement and intuitive brain games. Start with simple games like "Find It" or "Hide and Seek." These games not only engage your dog's mind but also help them focus on positive experiences. By doing so, you're subtly building your dog's confidence while creating positive associations all within a safe and stress free environment.
Disengagement and Focus Training
Reactive behavior in dogs sometimes stems from feeling overwhelmed, lacking confidence and optimism. To help your furry friend disengage from triggers, let's break it down:
Find Their Threshold: Every dog has a comfort zone. Identify what your dogs triggers are and become aware of how they “fill your dogs bucket”. Now figure out what “empties” their bucket and how you can incorporate this into your walks, maybe a sniffari.
Teach your dog to value disengaging: The skill of disengagement is best learned without the stress of the environment adding to the “game” . Play games at home that teach your dog the value of disengaging before introducing any environmental triggers.
Learn how to focus: Teaching your dog games that help create and grow their skills to learn how to focus, why it is important, and how FUN it can be, is going to grow your relationship, trust and communication.
Champion of Optimism: Strengthening Their Spirit
Your pup's confidence journey is like climbing a mountain: one step at a time. Boosting their optimism is key:
Set Achievable Goals: Break down training into small, achievable steps. Each success builds your dog's optimism, making them more willing to take on challenges.
Celebrate the Wins: Whether it's learning a new game or changing when you reward your dog for making the right choice. Positive reinforcement builds a positive mindset. For you and your dog!
Create a Safe Haven: Dogs need a safe space where they can retreat when things get overwhelming. This sanctuary reassures them and helps them regroup.
Be Their Cheerleader: Shower your furry buddy with things they love from you like love, praise, and pets. Your unwavering support boosts their confidence and makes them feel like they can conquer anything.
Remember, every dog is unique, so take your time to understand your pup's personality and pace. With games based training, patience, and heaps of positivity, you'll be amazed at the transformation your reactive dog can achieve.
So grab that leash, put on your best adventure hat, and let's embark on a journey filled with tail wags, treats, and tons of triumphs! 🌟🐾

Finding Your Powerful "Why" Through the Love for Your Dog.
Have you ever wondered what drives you to do the things you do?
What motivates you to get out of bed every morning and pursue your dreams?
Finding your powerful "why" is essential for creating a fulfilling and purpose-driven life. And sometimes, that "why" can be found in the unconditional love and companionship of our furry friends, like our beloved dogs.
My Powerful “WHY” came to me when I got Indy.
The widely know training methods with consequence based training just felt wrong to me and I wanted to find a better way to teach her the skills she would need. She is a very sensitive soul and I knew that traditional training was going to break our relationship and I wasn’t about to let that happen. I searched the internet and happened to find Absolute Dogs and my world changed forever. Their happy, upbeat, positive attitude was a bit over the top at first but is highly effective to get me motivated to continue to work past the learning curve of games based training. Boy am I ever happy I did because I know that I have provided Indy with a way to communicate with me while she grows her skills to handle the “real world”.
She has her struggles with other dogs and more recently bugs (wasps) are causing her some anxiety but she has ways to communicate her discomfort to me and I can support her while we grow her skills to learn how to overcome her anxiety and overwhelm.
The best part is while we train we get to strengthen our relationship and have fun!
The Unbreakable Bond
Dogs have a unique ability to touch our hearts and bring immense joy into our lives. They offer unwavering loyalty, endless affection, and a sense of companionship that is hard to find elsewhere. Our dogs become an integral part of our families, and their presence can have a profound impact on our overall well-being.
Teaching Us Unconditional Love
One of the most remarkable qualities of dogs is their ability to love unconditionally. They don't judge us based on our flaws or mistakes; instead, they accept us for who we are, flaws and all. This unconditional love teaches us the importance of accepting ourselves and others, fostering a sense of compassion and empathy that extends beyond our relationship with our furry friends.
Inspiring Responsibility and Commitment
Owning a dog comes with great responsibility. From ensuring they are well-fed and exercised to providing them with a safe and loving environment, dogs rely on us for their care. This responsibility teaches us the value of commitment and consistency. It reminds us that our actions have a direct impact on the well-being of those we love, motivating us to show up and be the best version of ourselves.
Finding Purpose and Meaning
Our dogs often become our source of purpose and meaning. They rely on us for their almost everything, giving us a sense of responsibility and a reason to strive for something greater. Whether it's training them, providing them with a loving home, or simply being there for them, our dogs give us a sense of purpose that goes beyond ourselves.
Embracing Joy and Living in the Present
Dogs have an incredible ability to live in the present moment. They find joy in the simplest of things, reminding us to appreciate the little moments in life. Their playful nature and infectious enthusiasm inspire us to let go of worries and stress, embracing the present moment and finding happiness in the here and now.
Your Dog as Your Motivational Force
When you tap into the love and connection you have with your dog, you can discover a powerful "why" that drives you to create positive change in your life. Your dog can be your motivational force, reminding you of the importance of love, responsibility, and living a purpose-driven life.
So, the next time you look into your dog's eyes, take a moment to reflect on the profound impact they have on your life. Allow their love and companionship to inspire you to find your powerful "why" and pursue your dreams with unwavering determination.

The Importance of Dog Fitness for Injury Prevention
Keeping Your Pup Fit and Happy
As a responsible and caring dog guardian, there's nothing more important than the health and well-being of our furry companions. Just like us, dogs require regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight, strong muscles, and overall vitality. But did you know that ensuring your dog stays fit not only enhances their quality of life but also plays a crucial role in preventing injuries?
In this blog post, we'll explore the significance of dog fitness and how it can safeguard our four-legged friends from unnecessary pain and suffering.
1. Maintaining a Healthy Weight
Obesity in dogs is a growing concern and can lead to various health issues, including joint problems, heart disease, and diabetes. Regular exercise helps burn calories, preventing excessive weight gain and maintaining a healthy body mass for your canine companion. By keeping your dog at a proper weight, you lessen the burden on their joints and decrease the likelihood of developing joint-related injuries.
2. Building Strong Muscles and Bones
Just like humans, dogs benefit greatly from strong muscles and bones. Regular physical activity helps build and maintain muscle mass, providing better support for the skeletal system. Strong muscles also aid in stabilizing joints, reducing the risk of sprains and strains.
3. Improving Flexibility and Balance
Incorporating activities that challenge your dog's balance and flexibility, such as walking on uneven surfaces or engaging in canine-specific fitness exercises, can enhance their overall stability. Improved balance reduces the likelihood of accidental slips and falls, minimizing the chances of fractures or other injuries.
4. Enhancing Cardiovascular Health
A fit and active lifestyle improve your dog's cardiovascular health, ensuring that their heart and lungs are in top shape. A strong heart can pump blood efficiently, delivering oxygen and nutrients to the body's tissues, while healthy lungs supply fresh oxygen for cellular function. This cardiovascular fitness reduces the risk of heart-related problems and keeps your furry friend energized for all the activities they love.
5. Strengthening Ligaments and Tendons
Ligaments and tendons play a vital role in connecting bones and providing stability to joints. Regular exercise helps strengthen these connective tissues, making them more resilient and less susceptible to injuries like sprains and tears.
6. Mental Stimulation and Behavioral Benefits
Apart from the physical advantages, dog fitness also offers significant mental stimulation. Engaging in various activities and exercises keeps your dog's mind sharp and helps prevent boredom, which can lead to destructive behaviors. A mentally stimulated dog is less likely to engage in risky behaviors that could result in accidents or injuries.
7. Preventing Common Injuries
Regular exercise and conditioning can reduce the risk of common injuries in dogs. Strengthening the supporting structures of their joints through exercise can help protect against these painful conditions.
Ensuring your dog maintains an active and healthy lifestyle is essential for their overall well-being and longevity. Regular exercise not only keeps them physically fit but also provides mental stimulation and behavioral benefits. By preventing weight gain, strengthening muscles and bones, and improving cardiovascular health, you significantly reduce the risk of injuries and joint-related problems.
With the right approach to dog fitness, you can give your beloved companion the gift of a long, happy, and injury-free life. So, grab that leash, head outdoors, and embark on an adventure that will enrich both of your lives in immeasurable ways.
Always consult with your veterinarian before starting any fitness program for your dog. Every dog has different exercise needs based on their breed, age, and individual health conditions.

Unleashing the Power of Games: A Revolutionary Approach to Dog Training
Unleashing the power of games based dog training.
Training your furry friend can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it can also come with its fair share of challenges.
Games based dog training aims to transform the way we train our four-legged companions, providing an innovative and highly effective approach to canine education.
In this blog post, we will explore the benefits of this unique approach and how it can help you build a stronger bond with your beloved pup.
What is games based dog training? Unlike traditional training methods that focus on obedience commands and corrections, Fit Fido takes a game-based approach, turning training into a fun and engaging experience for both you and your dog. These games are designed to tap into your dog's natural instincts and drives, creating a positive learning environment that promotes enthusiasm and willingness to participate.
Building a Strong Relationship: One of the key advantages of Fit Fido’s training style is their emphasis on strengthening the bond between you and your dog. By incorporating play, rewards, and positive reinforcement, these games help foster a deep sense of trust and understanding. As you and your dog work together as a team, you'll develop a stronger connection and a mutual respect that forms the foundation for effective training.
Enhancing Engagement and Focus: Many dogs struggle with distractions, making it challenging to maintain their attention during training sessions. Fit Fido tackles this issue head-on by teaching dogs to actively engage with their owners and focus on the task at hand. By making training sessions enjoyable and stimulating, dogs become eager participants, ready to learn and respond to your cues even in distracting environments.
Tailored Training for All Dogs: Whether you have a young puppy or a senior dog, Fit Fido creates tailored lessons to meet the specific needs of every canine. The programs recognize that each dog is unique, with different strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Strengthening Your Bond.
Strengthen your bond with your dog.
Nurturing Your Relationship with Your Dog through Positive Game-Based Training
Building a strong and loving relationship with your furry companion is a rewarding experience that brings immense joy to both you and your dog. In the past, training methods often relied on dominance and coercion, but today, we have a better understanding of dog behaviour and the importance of positive reinforcement.
By incorporating games into your dog training routine, you can foster a bond built on trust, respect, and mutual understanding. In this blog post, we will explore how you can grow your relationship with your dog using positive, game-based training techniques.
The Power of Positive Reinforcement: Positive reinforcement is the cornerstone of game-based dog training. Dogs are highly motivated by rewards such as treats, praise, and play. When your dog performs a desired behaviour, whether it's sitting, lying down, or fetching, reward them immediately with praise and a treat. This encourages your dog to associate the behaviour with positive outcomes, making them more likely to repeat it in the future.
Engaging Interactive Games: Games provide an excellent opportunity to interact with your dog while reinforcing good behaviour. Here are some engaging games you can play to strengthen your bond:
a.Catch: An amazing game for focus and stillness. I like to start with an open flat hand with one piece of food. Get your dog’s attention ( I usually say “ready” ) and once they are looking at you move your hand in a slow throwing motion and once your dog starts to follow say “catch” as you release the food from your flat hand and aim it towards the tip of their nose.
b. Hide and Seek: This game stimulates your dog's mental and physical abilities. Begin by asking your dog to stay(or use a boundary) while you find a hiding spot(for yourself or a toy or food). Once hidden, call or release your dog to signal them to find you or the item. When they successfully locate you or the item, reward them with treats and lots of praise.
c. Tug of War: Contrary to popular belief, tug of war can be a healthy and enjoyable game when played correctly. Establish cues such as "get it" (when your dog picks up the toy) and "drop it" (when they release it). Let your dog win more often than not to maintain their enthusiasm and confidence.
Training Parkour: Parkour training not only provides physical exercise for your dog but also improves their focus, responsiveness and grows your trust and relationship! In the forest or at a local park use simple obstacles in your environment, like stumps, benches, logs or cement walls, to interact with your dog. Encourage your dog to put their front 2 paws on the obstacles using positive reinforcement, rewards, and verbal cues. This activity builds trust, coordination, and communication between you and your furry friend.
Mental Stimulation with Puzzle Toys: Mental stimulation is vital for a well-rounded and contented dog. Puzzle toys challenge their problem-solving abilities and keep them engaged. Invest in interactive toys that require your dog to solve puzzles, find hidden treats, or manipulate objects to access rewards. These toys encourage independent thinking and prevent boredom, strengthening the bond between you and your dog.
Consistency, Patience, and Fun: Consistency and patience are crucial when training your dog. Set aside regular training sessions and stick to them. Keep the sessions short and enjoyable(3-5mins), ensuring your dog remains engaged and motivated.
